  • 1 tsp salt
  • 8.5 oz all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp La Española Mild & Light Olive Oil
  • 17 oz La Española Mild & Light Olive Oil (for frying)
  • Powdered Sugar (for dusting)
  • For Dipping:

  • Hot chocolate

preparation

  • 1.

Heat the water with the salt in a saucepan until it reaches a simmer. In a bowl, combine the flour and baking powder, mixing well. Gradually pour the hot water into the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon until the dough is smooth.

  • 2.

Add one tablespoon of La Española Mild & Light Olive Oil to the dough. Once it cools slightly, knead the dough with your hands until well combined. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped nozzle or use a churro maker. Pipe churros approximately 6 inches long and set aside.

  • 3.

Heat La Española Mild & Light Olive Oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the churros in small batches, ensuring they are golden and crispy on the outside while fully cooked on the inside. Avoid overcrowding the pan.

  • 4.

Remove the churros with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Dust with sugar while still warm.

  • 5.

Serve the churros hot, accompanied by a cup of rich hot chocolate for dipping.

The Art of Churros: A Global Delight with Spanish Roots

Hailing from Spain, Churros are a beloved treat enjoyed all around the world. Their crisp exterior and soft interior make them irresistible, whether served as a breakfast, dessert, or as a quick snack. In the United States, churros have become a fixture at carnivals and other public events. Often paired with delicious dipping sauces like hot chocolate or dulce de leche, churros have become the snack of choice for a whole host of occasions, pleasing both kids and grown ups in equal measure.

Why Use Olive Oil for Churros?

The type of oil used for frying greatly impacts the flavor and texture of churros. La Española Mild & Light Olive Oil is an excellent choice because of its neutral flavor and high smoke point. This ensures the churros fry evenly and develop a light, crispy exterior without absorbing excessive oil.

Benefits of Frying with Olive Oil:

1.    Crispier Results: Its high heat tolerance helps create perfectly golden churros without burning.

2.    Enhanced Flavor: While light in flavor, it adds a subtle richness to the dough that complements the sweetness of the sugar and chocolate.

Tips for Perfect Churros Every Time

1.    Use a Star Nozzle: The signature ridges on churros are created by piping the dough through a star-shaped nozzle, which also helps them cook evenly.

2.    Test Oil Temperature: Use a small piece of dough to test the oil. If it sizzles gently and floats to the top, the oil is ready.

3.    Work in Small Batches: Overcrowding the pan lowers the oil temperature, leading to uneven cooking.
