Hacks of all sorts have been trending for the last year or so. Life hacks, work hacks, fun hacks, beauty hacks, food and diet hacks, kitchen hacks and many more. In this post we’ve got some kitchen hacks that we know you’ll be thankful you learned.
But first, what is a hack? The word hack is actually a slang term and is meant to capture the idea of a simple, often not obvious, way of doing something. A hack can be thought of as a simple solution to a common problem, but one that is often unknown or overlooked.
In this sense kitchen hacks are simple solutions to common kitchen problems. And we’ve got 5 excellent ones just for you!
Protect Sharp Knives
Keep your fingers safe from sharp knives in drawers, by putting a few elastic bands around the blade. Doing this also helps prolong the life of your knives as it will also protect them from getting dents and nicks in the blades.
Paper Towel in Leafy Greens
Leafy green vegetables are a staple in most kitchens, but keeping them the perfect freshness can be a challenge. Often microgreens, especially baby spinach, will spoil quickly in the fridge. To prolong the life of leafy greens put a dry paper towel into the spinach bag or plastic container, it will absorb excess moisture and keep your greens crisp longer.
Shell Boiled Eggs Easily
It can be frustrating and time consuming to peel the shells off of hard boiled eggs, but there is hack that makes it easy. Simply add a tablespoon of baking soda to the boiling water and your eggshells will peel much more easily.
If you forget to take the butter out of the fridge and you want to soften it quickly, don’t use a microwave! Instead fill a tall glass or glass bowl with very warm, even boiling water, to heat the glass, then pour the water out. Next, place the glass over the butter on the counter like a tent. The warm glass will gently soften the butter without having to use a microwave.
Often when you use a metal spoon to stir in a metal pot or metal dish the spoon will constantly want to slip into the bowl or fall into the hot liquid. Avoid this by putting an elastic band wrapped a few times around the handle of the spoon above where it would rest on the side of the bowl or pan, this way it won’t slip in!
